“Capt. Roberts allowed me to run it like I owned it, which was invaluable,” said Capt. Moder, 27. “I had a full year as manager, out on tows, on salvages, and handled everything. I hit the ground running.”
Capt. Moder lives on Merritt Island, Fla., where his main Sea Tow office is based. His fleet of four Sea Tow vessels is spread out at three different locations within his Area of Responsibility. “Here in Port Canaveral there are locks and a Barge Canal that connects the ocean to the ICW,” he said. “Because of the locks and the no-wake zones, it can be really slow going. The best way to serve our members is to have our boats in different locations, and once we get the call, we go to the boat.”
Capt. Moder grew up on the water in New Jersey, and joined the U.S. Coast Guard out of high school. He spent eight years in the U.S. Coast Guard, where he worked closely with Sea Tow Central New Jersey. In 2011, Capt. Moder left the Coast Guard and began working for Capt. Matt McClave at Sea Tow Northern New Jersey.
“I was Matt’s full-time captain and learned a lot over those three years,” Capt. Moder said. “I had a lot of experience towing and with salvage, things that I learned how to do in the Coast Guard, but didn’t have a chance to do on a regular basis. With Sea Tow Northern New Jersey I was on the water all the time.”
Capt. Moder and his team of four licensed U.S. Coast Guard Sea Tow Captains must adapt to extremely varied water conditions. “Inside the locks of Port Canaveral there is no tide, and when there is no wind it’s like a lake,” Capt. Moder said. “Of course when you go offshore 30 or 40 miles then you can be in big seas. So we have to be ready for anything out there.”
“We’re delighted that Capt. Moder has taken over operations at Sea Tow Port Canaveral,” said Capt. Joe Frohnhoefer, Sea Tow Founder and CEO. “His experience and expertise ensures that Sea Tow members and other boaters in the area will continue to receive the highest level of professional service should they need assistance on the water.”
